squash match results...

We have some history now in the battle for squash match supremecy between me-too.net (Austen) and compulogix (Mark). It's only fair to point out that Mark and I have been playing squash matches against each other since 2000 (I think!) and he routinely beat me... so while the more recent squash match results are shown below it's safe to assume that Mark won the previous years squash contests.

Squash Summary: A late run of bad luck, dodgy shoulders and never-ending colds saw Mark's lead slip away allowing Austen to win the squash battle this year.
Squash Update: Past the halfway point of the year now and Mark's run of form is giving his lead a bit of a buffer...
Early days yet, Mark's lost quite a bit of weight recently and is more spritely round the squash court as a result and Austen is determined to cycle (more) so the squash matches should be close and competitive this year. Update, Mark's shoulder problem looks as though it may be a longer term injury / handicap so under advisement from his Doctor (honestly!) we've agreed for Mark to start with a 4 point headstart each game and to play each game up to 12 points... this points offset can be adjusted as necessary. Mark has made something of a comeback recently winning 13 out of the last 18 squash matches! Because Mark's zooming off like a runaway train he now only has a 2 point advantage and we play squash up to 10 points...

A strange year for squash, Mark started very strong (being 7:1 up in squash matches in March) then seemed to go off the boil a bit... or maybe after leaving the company I was working for in March and becoming more relaxed / less stressed as a result my squash improved? Either way by August we were level and when I next managed to get in the lead I was able to hold on to it to the end of the year (in fact I won over 80% of the subsequent squash matches in 2006). While the final scoreline may imply a convincing victory my recollection of events is far from that with many squash matches going narrowly my way rather than Mark's... hey, I'm not complaining!

Up until about June we were pretty much neck and neck in terms of match victories (9:9) and for a while after that I had a bit of a winning streak but couldn't hold Mark off who became more motivated as the end of the year drew near and seemed to be beating me at squash just for fun (like he used to). In the final analysis 2005 was a draw us each having won 17 matches... in reality the year was mine for the taking but I couldn't resist Mark's late in the day rekindled motivation, gah!

We are both very keen squash players and what we lack in skill we make up for in enthusiasm. Squash is a fantastically enjoyable and competitive game and if you're thinking of taking it up, do! If you play already to an okish standard and are looking for a squash partner or just the odd squash game every now and again and you live near Dewsbury, Batley, Cleckheaton , Morley then drop us a line and I'm sure one of us will be able to make it.

By way of a bit of background when these squash pages were started I was mid 30s and Mark was mid / early 40s... Mark is the more skillful player (by far) and has an impressive array of squash shots, flicks horribly annoying dummies! If Mark is playing on form then at times I feel like a spectator (that's not enjoying the show!). I think I run more than Mark (largely because I have to) and would argue that ability to get around the court is my strength. Our different squash styles and strengths generally make for very interesting matches. We play best of 5 games (although we invariably play a few more 'warm-down' games afterwards) and we tend to play in Cleckheaton or Morley as a second choice. I try to cycle to squash but this doesn't always (or even often) happen despite the fact that I think I play much better when I have biked than when I've not. Mark tends to arrive before me (ok, I tend to arrive late!) and so gets more of a warm which I think suits his game as he doesn't tend to play as well when he's had less of a warm up.

Ok, enough of the fluff, the squash match results for each year are shown in the table above, click the year to get a week by week account of how the squash results went that year. Maybe I should invest in some data plotting software / data visualisation software like scanalyser so I can plot the results of the squash matches... ;-) Happy squashing!
