Mark's cough had cleared up and we both came out of the blocks at a very promising pace and actually had some darn good quash rallies, moreso at the beginning than at the end. It was a very good runaround and I think both of us had quite a bit of energy throughout which was good to see (and feel!). Mark conceeded the year and I think the scoreline for the week, as for the whole of 2006, doesn't tell the whole story and is overly flattering. Bring on 2007! ;-)

Expectations about the quality of this the first squash match in three weeks were not very high, partly due to the fact that we'd not played (together) for a while and partly because the reason for not playing was that Mark had been unwell (and so might still be). The squash game (from my point of view!) wasn't bad and I enjoyed my first opportunity for a runaround for a while but Mark was not fully recovered and did well given he seemed to be only working on one lung! Add to that that I was exceedingly late (25mins!) and you'll see why I've not had the cheek to increment my total. Sorry Mark! (15min game forfeit is now in place!)

This squash match started off as possibly our worst match in living memory... not so much the mis-hits (of which there were plenty) but just general shot accuracy and complete strategic ineptness!! Thankfully the quality of the squash match improved albeit giving Mark the victory (which I can't honestly complain about)... don't get me wrong, the squash was enjoyable but it wouldn't have made a good training video for a squash newcomer! If we get 2 squash games in next week and 1 each week in December then Mark can still draw the year!

Another squash match with lots of running around but unfortunately an uncharacteristically high number of unforced errors from both of us - rather frustrating. The score line is misleading as Mark should have got a game at least and but for some key errors may have done more. We both had lots of 'legs' but what we had in energy we lacked in skill... it was as though we were both nervous and so were missing shots we'd normally have eaten for breakfast and snatching alot of shots too. Unless we play more than 1 game per week it would appear I have won 2006 (which probably makes it about 1:4 in years!) so now that's out of the way maybe the standard and consistency of the squash we play from hereon will improve... fingers crossed!

A high tempo squash match with both doing a fair(ish!) share of running... two of the games went to 10 points which I don't think we've had for quite some (strangely!) While the games were very enjoyable and competitive I can't help but think that Mark made very hard work of it missing a lot of 'dead cert' winners and at important points in games. That being said... the obvious conclusion would be that I must have been playing rubbish squash not to capitalise on all the chances that came my way... I don't think I played badly so I don't know what to think! Either way this was Mark's first win in six squash matches and has been a long time coming... this also means that he can still win the year!

My leg muscles were aching after this one... a couple of weeks of no squash or badminton and moving just hurts! Mark came out of the blocks in fantastic form to win the first squash game 9:0... he just played fantastically well, stunning accuracy and killer shots, what can I say, other than extremely frustrating! (I didn't even work up a sweat!). The second squash game went Mark's way again but at least I managed to score some points in that game. I came back from behind in the third to win (to avoid being hammered) and the fourth and final games were similarly busy ones but with Mark making a few more unforced errors which let me play more and eventually win. Some good and varied rallies and good movement from both of us I think. If we play again on Thursday and then every week for the rest of the year then there are enough games left for Mark still to win the year!

This was the first squash match in a long time where, energy-wise, I didn't "hit the wall"... I'm not sure why (but I wish I knew)!? Good mobility and motivation and am enjoying the new squash racquet which seems to give me more control over the soft shots and makes good some of the digs I would previously have missed. Mark's accuracy let him down a bit and I tried dummying more of my shots which got me some extra points that I don't think he was expecting. There are nine more weeks left in 2006... to win Mark needs to bag 8 of those... I'd feel more confident about my position if memories of what happened last year weren't lingering so vividly!

A very busy 5 set squash game this one (with the exception of the 3rd which won 9:0... sorry, it doesn't happen often so I felt obliged to mention it! ;-)). I didn't feel as tired as I did for Tuesday night's squash game which was just as well because I was having to cover quite a bit of ground. It was nice to have more squash rallies and longer rallies at that... something that we don't really seem to have had much of recently.

Morley for this week's squash contest (and driving)... quite a scrappy match really that was lost rather than won... I seemed to tire quickly and was let off by Mark's accuracy (or lack of it). Last sqaush game went to 10-9 and I was very glad to tie it up then as I didn't honestly think I had a fifth game in me!

Again at cleck and again by car and again I lost... must cycle next time! More of a squash match than Tuesday's squash session with the last game going to 10-8 (I think?) so in reality the match could have gone either way but in fairness it probably went the right way. Mark's on a roll and is growing in confidence.

Drove to cleck for this squash match and took something of a pummelling from Mark... when he's good he's great. Most of his shots were inch perfect making the squash rallies rather short. Finished the squash match feeling rather frustrated, not so much with how I played (as I don't think I played badly - just out-classed) but with the lack of a proper run around! At least there was some dancing going on in the bar afterwards ;-)

A month behind schedule but finally I managed to cycle to Cleckheaton for squash this week and, more importantly, back again too! We both had shiny new squash rackets this week that were very light - I think this benefitted me more than it did Mark who is stronger than I am... I like the new 'liquid metal' racquet as it's easy to flick with the wrist which makes previously impossible shots (for me) less impossible and there's not much of a compromise in terms of power compared to my previous sqaush racket. The game started well but with Mark taking a bit of time to get used to the new racket and was tooing and froing quite nicely until the fourth game when Mark started to flag, probably on account of his getting a cough / cold. Either way I was glad not to be playing a 5th game as there were some meaty hills between where we were and my bed!

Still at Morley for squash this week (definitely the last week here). I thought I'd be a wash out this week as I felt awful on Sunday and MOnday but I'd seemed to have recovered for today and the cycle ride beforehand went well which was pleasing. We had a very active first four squash games when I don't remember *not* being out of breath but at least Mark was having to do some running also (nice change!). The final squash game started quite tense but once I drifted a few points to the good the quality of the game seemed to tail off which Mark said he was disappointed about. Mark's on home turf next week so we'll see what happens then!

We played our squash game in a newly painted squash court in Morley. I felt my mobility was good and my shot accuracy was fair and I felt quite 'strong' which is a word I don't think I've used before. I normally lose a few points each match by not gripping the racquet tight enough so the head rotates when I hit the ball meaning the ball drops short of the wall - this didn't happen today. Mark seemed up for it and it was quite a busy set of games until the last game where Mark's mind was elsewhere allowing me to win 9:1 in a very short and anticlimatic game. Cleck from next week so we'll see how far my 3 match buffer gets me!

Squash today was back at Cleckheaton Sports centre, the old stomping ground! Mark's squash shots were variable which allowed me to get into the game. Lots more running and longer squash rallies than on Tuesday, I found it enjoyable and I suspect Mark found his varying accurary frustrating. The games were close which meant this could have gon Mark's way rather than mine! Plan to start cycling to Cleckheaton from next week so I guess the tiny buffer of squash games I have will quickly be reversed!

What can I say, I didn't play poorly at squash, no worse than normal anyway, but just about every shot from Mark was a just above the line winner! First two games he played fantastic squash it was (almost!) a joy to get hammered 9:1 and 9:1 I think it was. I got more into the 3rd squash game as Mark started to tire but that was way too late. Nothing much more to say other than 'well done!'

Thanks to Mark's generosity we played squash in Morley again this week (deferring for another week my having to cycle all the way to Cleck... and back!). I did a slightly longer route to the squash courts on my bike this week (about 9miles) taking in a few hills, which hurt. The squash match itself was mixed with a very anticlimactic ending with Mark completely folding 9:1 - I wasn't doing anything different and we didn't have much in the way of rallies. We played another *two* squash games after the (disappointing) one that mattered which we have never done before so I guess that indicates that we were both a bit frustrated... I suspect Mark was more than me! The ride back home after squash was slow and tedious, the highlight was a bunch of youths throwing something sizable at me from their speeding car as they overtook me; whatever it was shattered when it hit the parked car I was going past at the time. Nice.

Back on the bike again and a longer more hilly route wasn't enough to put me off my squash! Actually, that's a lie, I felt tired (although not as tired as last week) but never stopped running... but this squash match was lost rather than won. After the first game there was a lot of 'tin' from Mark and he served high quite a few times again but at the start of some close games rather than at the end. Not complaining about the result but I did feel like a bit of a fraud!

I finally managed to cycle to the squash courts tonight! A very tiring 5 game match in a rather sweaty squash court. The last two squash games could easily have been Mark's but for some high serves at key points giving me a chance to get back in (I think he actually scored more points than me in total). Quite scrappy play on both parts but I do remember one fantastic rally that had everything in it - they don't happen often but when they do they're great. I seemed to get sucked into doing all the running again during most rallies, a habit I shall have to break. After this squash match I wasn't rellishing the bike ride home, but at least I'm back in front for the first time since the start of July.

Back in Morley again - I almost managed to cycle there this time! I managed to stop the rot and was much more focussed than last week, played quite well (with a different squash raquet) and managed to get into most of the games... Mark, when he's accurate, is lethal and I increasingly find myself waiting for him to slip up and let me into a rally / game. The past few weeks his shot accuracy, despite being variable, has been much better than of previous months.

Morley Leisure Centre again this week. Mark's back in front and the first one to hit double figures of squash matches won this year! I didn't really turn up and was an unwilling and apathetic observer of this convincing annialation. Not much fun and to cap it all the bar was closed!

Back to even stevens level pegging all square 50-50... MArk was on form with the vast majority of his shots finding their mark. He enjoyed the victory, as well he should, as he's not won a match for some time and the manner of the win was emphatic!

Back on Mark's home turf this week and thankfully the squash court wasn't as hot as I thought it would be... not to start off with anyway! Mark gifted the first game to me with a fair few missed shots that would / should have been winners. Second squash game went to Mark after much more of a runaround. Third and fourth (and fifth!) squash games went my way - while I felt mobile and quick off the mark I think the score was, again, flattering on account of the number of Mark's unforced errors that ended rallies. I'd not had any caffeine at all today (first time in I don't know how long) and I had thought that the 'aggression' in my game might have ebbed to the detriment of my game... maybe the lingering memory of Portugal's Christiano Ronaldo knocking England out of the World Cup served as a substitute for coffee in this respect :-/

Morley was this week's venue for the squash match... but at the slightly later time of 9:45pm. Mark seemed more 'up for it' than usual which was good to see and pressumably meant that he'd woken up to the fact that if I beat him in today's squash match he'd be going behind for the first time this year! The lights went off at 10:30 meaning we had to call it a draw... I was actually quite riled by this as I needed closure and at least wanted to give Mark the opportunity to win the last game. Good games of squash, but very disappointing to leave the squash court with business unfinished :-/

Parity!! While the scoreline in squash games was the same this week as last any / all of these games could have gone the other way. I was desperate, perhaps more desperate than Mark, to get the squash session over and done with asap as I knew I wouldn't be able to last long, not at that pace anyway! Mark tells me that next week's squash match will be very different... I have no reason not to believe him (especially as his shot accuracy was much better this week than it has been for quite some time).

Playing at Batley in the 'dwarf courts' we had a choice between a cool squash court with holes in the wall, a terrible floor and flashing flourescent lights or a squash court with better walls but an equally poor floor that was extremely hot. We chose the oven option which made the game 'interesting'. Lots of slack shots from Mark made me look alot better than I think I was and the scoreline was a little flattering especially when the points Mark scored, or didn't score, are taken into account! I think he will make me pay for it next week...

Events and apathy meant it was a few more weeks before I got to beat Mark again at squash. Now that the scoreline is more respectable I don't mind updating the website! Sorry for making you wait to see the scores Mark!

Mark's obviously feeling quite generous by letting me win the squash matches either side of my birthday - he's got a bit of a buffer of victories so I guess he can afford to do it!

Not a good start to the squash season for Austen after the Xmas break, I wasn't even able to win one squash game... perhaps the result of a few too many mince pies and sherries!
