SMTP Servers and Outgoing Mail Servers...

SMTP Servers are email servers run by ISP's that direct the outgoing emails of people that use them. To reduce spam users tend to have to have subscribed to an ISP's services or be using that ISP's dialup number if they want to use their SMTP server (i.e. be able to send email using 3rd party email client software like Outlook Express, Outlook, Eudora etc). Below is a list of some of the main ISPs and their associated SMTP Server addresses that you will need when configuring Outlook Express to send and receive email.

ISP stands for Internet Service Provider and is basically any one of a growing number of telecoms / internet companies that enable third parties to access the internet via their services. The most common ways of connecting to the internet are via dialup modem, cable modem, adsl and broadband. Strictly speaking ADSL (asynchronous digital subscribe lines) and cable modems are forms of broadband. Broadband is called broadband since the bandwidth (rate at which data can be downloaded to your PC and uploaded from your PC) is higher (i.e. broader). So if you connect to the internet by 'ADSL broadband' your surfing will be much faster than if you were using a dialup modem. Costs of ASDL broadband internet access have plummeted recently so if you have not looked into it recently then you really should!

Anyway, when you have your ISP sorted and you are hooked up to the internet one of the things you will invariably need to do aside from surfing, downloading MP3 music, transferring file via FTP perhaps, sharing files, using the search engines to find information or using chat programs like MSN chat etc... is to send and receive email. Once you have your email account details from your ADSL broadband provider sending emails and receiving email is no problem. A crucial bit of info that your ADSL broadband supplier should have given you is their SMTP server settings via which all outgoing emails from your PC are routed (hence the table above!).

Using an incorrect SMTP server, i.e. not the one that is operated by your broadband ADSL provider, may mean that your emails never get delivered to their intended recipients or that they are incorrectly identified as spam email (unwanted / unsolicited email) which could result in a blacklisting (gulp!)... so take a moment to ensure you are using the correct mail server for your broadband supplier and make sure your messages are delivered hassle free!

If you need any domain names registering or affordable web hosting for your domain names or web design or database design services then please consider using me-too.net - thanks.
